Qualities/Actions: St. John's Wort, also known as Hypericum perforatum, is a dried herb that has been used for centuries for its medicinal properties. It is commonly used as a natural remedy for mild to moderate depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders. St. John's Wort is also known for its anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties, making it a popular choice for treating skin conditions such as wounds, burns, and insect bites. Additionally, this herb has been used to alleviate symptoms of menopause and premenstrual syndrome.
Analgesic: Pain relief.
Antidepressant: Increase neurotransmitters. These are chemicals in the brain like serotonin and noradrenaline. They can improve mood and emotion.
Anti-inflammatory: Controls inflammation, a reaction to injury or infection.
Antimicrobial: Kills microorganisms such as bacteria or mold, or stops them from growing and causing disease.
Antispasmodic: Calms nervous and muscular spasms or convulsions.
Anxiolytic: Anxiety relieving.
Astringent: Causes contraction of body tissues, checks blood flow, or restricts the secretion of fluids.
Emmenagogue: Stimulates or increases menstrual flow.
Nervine: Acts therapeutically upon the nerves, particularly in the sense of a sedative that serves to calm ruffled nerves.
Vulnerary: Wound healing.
Common Use: Infusion, Tincture.
Safety: Not to be used if pregnant due to its emmenagogue properties. It is also not recomended during lactation, or prior to surgery as it could interact with some of the anesthethic drugs. St. John's Wort may increase photosensitivity. Extended use should be avoided. It interacts with some drugs such as blood thinners and antidepressants by introducing CYP450 drug-metabolizing enzymes and P-glycoprotein (a drug transporting protein).
